Whereabouts
Villa Camara is located in a medieval village on the island of Kythira. Considered the birthplace of the Goddess Aphrodite, Kythira is renowned for its bright and sunny atmosphere, its strong winds, secluded beaches, a number of traditional villages, monuments and churches of great archaeological and historical significance, and its unique sunsets. The scent of thyme, everpresent on the island, is one of its signature traits.
Kythira is on crossroads between the East and the West, and has thus been a melting pot of many different cultures through the ages. Following the end of the Greek classical period of antiquity, Kythira was ruled by Romans, Ottomans and the Byzantine Empire, followed by a period of Venetian rule, after which it was shortly ruled by the British and the French. Locals themselves, have immigrated to all corners of world, from America to Australia, Italy, Egypt, Asia Minor and beyond.
Villa Camara is positioned on the edge of a medieval village, a state-protected, picturesque traditional settlement engulfed by fruit and vegetable gardens, plains and other small traditional villages, with unique architectural characteristics. It is a central location and one of the main crossroads at the heart of the island. The village can serve as an ideal base from which to venture to, and discover the rest of the Kythira.
The surrounding natural landscape, and the deep blue stretch of sea visible from the village paint a very charming picture. Though several Greeks and foreigners have built their holiday homes here, giving a rejuvenating breath of fresh air to the region, older ruins and restored buildings still make up a uniquely quaint and beautiful setting, unscathed by time and history.
