Welcome to Kythira

Kythira is quite an impressively diverse Greek island with regards to its landscape and vibe, and one that tends to cover various tastes and styles. Even though it belongs to the Ionian islands complex positioned in the Ionian Sea, it actually also resembles a Cycladic island due to its location at the tip of the Aegean Sea, between Crete and the Peloponnese peninsula.

Its landscape, architecture and style tend to fuse Pelloponesian, Cretian, Cycladic and Ionian elements, giving Kythira a very unique and rare twist, and making it one of the places you will adore for its simple beauty and its uniquely relaxing vibe.

In Greek Mythology, Kythira was also known as the Isle of the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite. It is still a prime location for couples, providing a laid-back and inspiring atmosphere for romantic summer getaways, though Kythira is a fantastic destination and a superb summer choice for all: groups of friends, couples and families all enjoy its astonishing un-spoilt, often conveniently secluded beaches, its unique walking and hiking paths and its truly authentically traditional character & island life.

Kythira is also renowned for its bright and sunny atmosphere, its strong refreshing winds, its traditional villages and local culture, monuments and churches of great archaeological and historical significance, and last but certainly not least, its unique sunsets. The scent of thyme, ever-present on the island, is one of its signature traits.

Though several Greeks and foreigners have built their holiday homes here, giving a rejuvenating breath of fresh air to the region, older ruins and restored buildings still make up a uniquely quaint and beautiful setting, unscathed by time and history.

Kythira is on crossroads between the East and the West and has thus, despite being a Greek island population-wise since early antiquity, been a melting pot of many different cultures through the ages. Following the end of the Greek classical period of antiquity, Kythira was ruled by Romans, Ottomans and the Byzantine Empire, followed by a period of Venetian rule, after which it was shortly ruled by the British and the French. Locals themselves, have emigrated to all corners of world, from America to Australia, Italy, Egypt, Asia Minor and beyond.

Visiting one of Kythrira’s often listed/state-protected medieval villages or settlements tends to inspire even the most demanding of visitors. These picturesque traditional settlements are usually engulfed by fruit and vegetable gardens, plains and other small traditional villages, with unique architectural characteristics.
