A righteous cause: Free Santorini from its ‘sunset fame’!

Santorini is indeed one of the most unique, photographed, and instagrammed destinations in the world. That much is a known fact. Yet there is so much more to this naturally moulded splendor, this internationally revered island setting, than initially meets the eye.
The breathtaking sunsets in this remarkable holiday destination are the first thing that pops to mind when referring to Santorini. That may be true, and in fact a good enough reason to visit in and of itself. Yet we must also acknowledge the captivating beauty, and uniqueness on every aspect, that makes up an unforgettable holiday. It is these features that in fact define Santorini. They are what will make you seek coming back again, and again, and again. Don’t be surprised when that happens. You are not alone. We have all felt that gravitational pull, year after year!
Santorini’s unique landscape is the result of a huge volcanic eruption that took place more than 3,500 years ago. This created the world famous Santorinian Caldera, the undoubted centerpiece of this remarkable destination. The only inside wall of a volcano that is currently inhabited, in the world.
Even the pristine beaches you will swim in, very unusual in form, tone, and shape, were the result of this eruption. Their names are derived from the colours of the cliffs that surround them: Black, Red and White Beach. Their magnificence, all shaped by this natural process, gives substantial meaning to the notion that absolute beauty can also arise through what initially was a destructive process. Sometimes what emerges may be more delightful than the original.
As a destination Santorini sees thousands of visitors paying tribute to that absolute beauty, year after year. However, despite its fairly rapid tourist-oriented development, locals have gone to great lengths and have successfully managed to preserve its unique architecture and idiosyncratic splendor. Cycladic cave houses are built amphitheatrically on the aforementioned inner volcano wall, and have totally retained their character.
This breathtaking setting is complimented by candlelit cafés, a vibrant nightlife and superior quality services that exceed any expectation. All of the above contribute in making each and every one of its villages the ideal scenery for any type of holiday.
Santorini: A Personal Memoir
Santorini has a special place in my heart. Having lived on the island for three consecutive years back in the day, it feels like home in every sense of the word. A home that I know will always be there to grace me with its mystique, elegance, and superior style. So what is it that makes Santorini stand out for me specifically?

Wine taste your heart out.
Wine-making in Santorini dates back to at least 1200 BC, with some evidence suggesting the industry goes back a further 500 years. The local method of cultivation is to cut the vines back to virtually ground level, and then weave the vines into little baskets. The grapes grow nestled within, protected from the strong winds and harsh volcanic sand. The indigenous white Assyrtiko grape, definitely one of my favourites, is the most commonly grown here. It produces an extremely dry wine with a citrusy, earthly flavour. A couple more indigenous white grape varieties are Athiri and Aidani. Moreover, one can also find some wines made from international varieties, alongside indigenous red grapes such as Mandilaria, and Mavrotragano. Cheers to that!

Megalochori Village
This is in fact one of the villages I lived in, during my three-year stay. Back then only locals were seen around Megalochori, as it was not considered one of the usual routes and sites that catch visitors’ attention. Many, if not most properties had been neglected. The village was largely left to its own devices, not getting the appreciation it rightfully deserved. Today, you will come across a very different situation. Architects from all over the world visit this no car destination because of the stunning renovations that have taken place here. You are probably wondering what my house looked like? Well, nowadays it is actually part of the Rent A Greek Home portfolio! Although the lovely outdoor Jacuzzi was not yet built then, Casa Tea was still as beautiful as it is today.

The one and only Atlantis Bookstore in Oia
If you are passionate about books, you may have come across the ‘best bookstore list’ of the world? It rightfully includes this magical little shop, right in the heart of the village of Oia. Definitely one to check out for its fame, authenticity and uniqueness.

Ambrosia Restaurant in Oia
Santorini is a showcase for Greece’s high-end culinary scene; it’s where up-and-coming chefs and those at the top of their profession are creating dishes so delicious, they can even rival Santorini’s stunning views. It’s hard to pick one, but if I had to choose, Ambrosia in Oia would be on my to-go list. Especially if I was only planning to stay for a few days. Bear in mind that a reservation is always necessary, as there are very few tables available. The food is delicious, and the view is also bound to reward your choice in every way
Local Tips

When to visit:
In order to avoid the summer crowds, I would definitely recommend visiting during spring and/or autumn. The wild cloud formations will add a certain something extra to your photos if you are lucky, plus it’s definitely not as hot as it is in July & August!

It’s not only for couples:
Despite being preferred by many as the ideal couples’ destination, Santorini actually has much to offer to most visitors. It even includes several hiking and climbing routes, so if adventure or any of the above seem exciting, you may certainly consider it for your next holiday!
-
Beaches:
In all honesty, Santorini is famous for many things, yet its beaches are not mentioned as often. Yet they are marvelously unique, and nothing like what most people will expect. Definitely all beaches are worth a visit, whether it is one of the black sand beaches, or the red one. The one that is mainly preferred by locals is Vlychada (white beach) as it offers more peace and quiet, especially in the context of how popular this island actually is.
With so much to explore and discover, Santorini makes the ideal setting for a trip that will stand out, and make some ripples! And you can rest assured, I have you covered every step of the way. Should you decide to visit, keep in mind that the personal love I have for Santorini, combined with my local living experience, will ensure you will enjoy everything the island has to offer. Avoiding the usual clichés and tourist traps, and benefitting from ‘local insider knowledge’ can often make all the difference in any widely visited destination. And talking of fabulous choices, check out just some of the accommodation options I would suggest below, and don’t hesitate to drop me a line to chat about anything else I may have not covered here.
